The Ruined Restaurant

The devastating bushfires of 2019, which swept across Victoria and New South Wales, left a vineyard in Tonimbuk, Victoria, in ruins. The flames reduced the existing restaurant and the owners' home to rubble, sparing only fragments and artifacts as silent witnesses to what once stood.

Rather than perceiving the fires solely as a tragedy, I sought to reinterpret the destruction as an opportunity—a catalyst for regeneration and renewal.

This perspective shaped my design approach, centering on the integration and repurposing of the materials and remnants left behind by the fire. The result is a space that honors the past while embracing the future—a place imbued with memory and reflection, evoking the essence of what once was.
