RELOCATED - The Latapie House by Lacaton & Vassal

The Latapie House, designed by the esteemed Lacaton & Vassal, is a truly exceptional example of architectural innovation. From its greenhouse structure on the East facade to the distinctive application of transparent polycarbonate panels, it transcends the conventions of a typical residential dwelling, challenging traditional expectations of domestic design.

Located in France, it stands as a fully functional and harmonious home. However, the question arose: "Would this design remain operable and livable if relocated to Australia?" In addressing this, it became clear that modifications and careful considerations were necessary to ensure its adaptability to a new climate and context.

Key factors such as the local weather conditions, the choice of materials, optimal orientation relative to the sun, and adherence to Australian building standards and regulations all required thorough examination. Furthermore, in line with contemporary sustainability practices, the house was now expected to incorporate Passive House principles.

Of particular relevance were passive heating and cooling, as well as passive ventilation systems, which were carefully integrated into the design to optimize energy efficiency and comfort, ensuring the home’s performance in Australia’s distinct environmental conditions.
